Antigua and Barbuda commits to hosting 250 Vincentians Spread the love By Carlena Knight Local disaster officials could be gearing up to receive at least 250 evacuees from St Vincent and the Grenadines, after an explosive eruption at the La Soufriere volcano on Friday morning. According to this week’s post-Cabinet report, the government has offered to accommodate 250 persons at the Jolly Beach Resort, if off-island evacuation is ordered. A plan was said to be worked out in Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, which would include activating LIAT to fly the evacuees to Antigua. However, there is no concrete timeline for when this would take place.

Jolly Beach resort to be turned into quarantine facility - severed workers remain unpaid

The government is accelerating arrangements to have the Jolly Beach Resort transitioned into a Covid-19 quarantine facility. Cabinet spokesman Melford Nicholas said that the facility is likely to be ready for use within two weeks and will accommodate persons placed in government quarantine and isolation. “Jolly Beach is in a state of flux, it is in receivership and so it’s a question of working with the receivers to ensure that we can put a management team in place to manage the health services that we want to do at that facility,” Nicholas told a press briefing yesterday. However, in excess of 400 people who were once employed at the resort are still without outstanding wages, benefits and severance. It is now almost a year since the resort closed in March 2020 and the monies cannot come soon enough for these workers who have in some cases managed to secure menial jobs, working only three days a week.

People in gov t quarantine must pay EC$100 a day - Antigua Observer Newspaper

People in gov’t quarantine must pay EC$100 a day By Orville Williams Persons arriving into Antigua, or who are already in the country and must be quarantined in a government facility, will now be expected to cover the cost of their meals for the duration of their stay. This is one of two policy changes the government has made in light of the current circumstances, with the other being a return to the centralisation of quarantined individuals, through placement in public quarantine facilities.  Earlier this year, when the quarantine policy was developed, the government had outlined certain elements – including the cost of meals – that would be covered by the quarantined individuals. This was met with public outcry, to which the government responded by agreeing to cover the costs.
