HADLEY Two local developers are telling town officials that the vacant Russell School in town center could be converted into housing.
But even though Barry Roberts of Amherst and Ronald Bercume of Hadley responded to a request for letters of interest put out by the town last fall, it’s uncertain whether town zoning rules would allow the building to be converted into apartments.
Town Administrator Carolyn Brennan informed the Select Board at its Jan. 6 meeting that Bercume and Roberts were the only ones who offered suggestions for the adaptive reuse of the 10,613-square-foot building, on a nearly 2-acre site, at 131 Russell St.

HADLEY After nearly three years on the Select Board, serving as chairman for one year and creating committees focused on climate action, affordable housing and diversity and equity, Christian Stanley will not seek reelection to the position.
“I really enjoy being on the board, but with COVID, with business and with life, I need to focus on other things right now,” Stanley said on Tuesday.

HADLEY Only essential services will be available in-person at the Hadley Senior Center until early January following a decision by the Select Board Dec. 17 to close the building to the public.
Citing the concerning rise in COVID-19 cases across the region in recent weeks, and anticipating the possibility of a similar spike following Christmas, the board voted 4-0, with Jane Nevinsmith abstaining, to keep the center shuttered until the board meets again on Jan. 6.
The decision also closes Town Hall to the public, though that building had been open to residents only by appointment.
