Law firm Piper Alderman says it signed on more than 40,000 electricity customers to the claim over the past six months after information sessions across the state, including Mackay and Sarina.
More than 1000 residents in Mackay are understood to have signed on to the claim.
The firm said the claim was filed in the Federal Court of Australia on Wednesday.
The class action is seeking to recover compensation for any customers who paid for electricity between January 20, 2015 and January 20 this year.
The claim alleges CS Energy and Stanwell Corporation engaged in conduct that artificially increased energy pricing.

A Mackay company is expected to begin repair works on the Bowen Wharf next month after winning the contract for the project.
North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation announced Wisely Services Pty Ltd as the principal contractor for its Bowen Wharf repair project.
Conducted as part of NQBP’s maintenance and repairs program, the project includes the repair or replacement of some of the wharf’s timber members.
NQBP chief executive officer Nicolas Fertin said the repairs would ensure the wharf remained available to the public and continued to provide temporary towage infrastructure for Abbot Point’s towage operations.
He once pedalled vacuums door-to-door and often left with less money than when he arrived.
At a Sydney trade show swamped with suits, his âMackay Suitâ â that is, shorts, a popped collar and thongs â caught all the wrong kinds of glances.
âPut me in front of the Queen and I wouldnât care,â was the retort.
Heâs fought âbig vacuumâ and lost, often. But only the battles.
Tony Sant, affectionately known to the people of Mackay as âMy Vacuum Manâ, is still waging war with a world thatâs moving faster than his professional passion can chase.
Itâs not a moniker he accepts lightly â and one worthy of a man who helped build the vacuum industry in Australia and now one of the final bastions of a bygone era.

The Incredable Tip Shop reopened on Saturday to more than 100 keen treasure hunters who braved wet and windy weather to score an early morning bargain.
Mother Nature threatened to rain on the grand reopening parade after the shop was forced to delay its post-New Yearâs return by a week.
Instead, Incredable Tip Shop social media and sales person Sheila Madsen was shocked to meet about 100 people at the gates at 9am on Saturday.
âNormally I post a video up of the first day of reopening and the big rush, but I didnât this time,â she said.
