ST. CLAIR SHORES The family of a man killed by a punch to the head in 2019 is suing the man charged in the death and the bar where it happened.
Around 1 a.m. Dec. 22, St. Clair Shores police were called to Kapone’s Sports Tavern, 24301 Harper Ave., for a report of an assault. When they arrived, they found 47-year-old Shawn Kubic, of St. Clair Shores, lying on the ground, unconscious and bleeding from his face. He was taken to a local hospital and died of blunt force trauma to the head a day later.
Warren City Council agrees to settle lawsuit with mayor

WARREN A lawsuit over matters ranging from access to city contracts and legal opinions to the current budget, the tax rate and appointed positions in the mayor’s office has been settled by a unanimous vote of the Warren City Council.
But even after the vote on Jan. 26, sources said it remained unclear whether the terms would be met as agreed in the settlement between Mayor Jim Fouts and members of the council, who filed the lawsuit last summer.
“Unfortunately, we had to file a lawsuit to protect the charter and the integrity of the tax and budget process,” Warren City Council Secretary Mindy Moore said at the meeting, where the settlement was considered and adopted after it was added to the agenda that evening. “If we did not file this lawsuit, we would have incorrect tax bills, an incorrect city budget and this council would not have access to important city documents and records.”

WARREN A local business alliance is backing one effort to recall Warren City Councilman Eddie Kabacinski, one of five members of the council who voted against a proposed settlement that could have ended a costly lawsuit over medical marijuana dispensary licensing.
“Even before his vote on this matter, I was inclined to run a recall on him anyhow,” said John Johnson, CEO of the Southeast Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the chairman of the recall committee.
Johnson said Kabacinski, elected in November 2019 to represent Warren’s City Council District 5, “had a lot of baggage” even before the vote on the settlement. He said Kabacinski was in the “weakest” position of the five council members who voted in late November to deny a proposed settlement and consent judgment in the Pinebrook Warren LLC et al vs. City of Warren et al case, brought by a host of hopeful marijuana dispensary operators.
A controversial member of the Warren City Council is being targeted for recall by a pro-business group for voting against a proposed settlement for lawsuits filed against the city by companies seeking marijuana licenses.
The SouthEast Michigan Chamber of Commerce (SEMC) has filed recall language seeking to remove Edward Eddie Kabacinski, a first-term councilman.
Kabacinski was part of the majority that voted for the settlement, which the SEMC has called a job killer, because it feels the agreement would result in hundreds of new jobs and revenue for tax-paying entities.
