When the calendar turned to 2020, chances are unless you were an epidemiologist you probably had no knowledge of COVID-19.
By mid March, this coronavirus disease would completely upend life as we know it in Macomb County and around the world.
Recently, Macomb Daily writers and editors held a meeting (virtually, of course) to sort out the top 10 news stories of 2020. Not surprisingly, the onset of COVID-19 and all that came with it was voted no. 1.

It was a pretty obvious choice in a year that came with lots of important news, including the disgraced resignation of a longtime Macomb County official, racial unrest, political strife in the countyâs largest city and an election that stamped Macomb as a solidly red county with Republicans seizing control of county government.

The assistant attorney general who prosecuted a high-profile rape case in Isabella County will face two charges of misconduct in office.
Chris Becker, Kent County prosecutor, announced Thursday afternoon that he plans to file the two five-year felony charges sometime soon against Brian Kolodziej for his conduct prosecuting Ian Elliott in the Rachel Wilson case.
Elliott was accused of raping Wilson at his apartment shortly after the two met at The Cabin on Aug. 31, 2016.

Becker spoke in the vaguest terms about what specifically Kolodziej did, and said he didn t know when formal charges would be filed. He did say that the case will go through the same Isabella County courts where first the county and then the state prosecuted Elliott.

Chad Barrett, the self-described celebrity chef, is headed to jail for domestic violence against his ex-wife.
Barrett, 33, was sentenced to jail time, probation and community service last week by Judge William Hackel III of the Macomb County 42nd District Court in New Baltimore via Zoom. Court proceedings are being conducted remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barrett, who has branded himself as a celebrity chef after making several TV appearances on national cooking shows, pleaded no contest in November to one count of misdemeanor domestic violence. It was his second domestic violence case, according to court records.
