(Enterprise file photo â Antonio Olivero) RAY BROOK The federal Bureau of Prisons reported Tuesday that 34 inmates at the Federal Correctional Institute at Ray Brook have tested positive for COVID-19, the most currently active cases ever at the prison since the start of the pandemic. BOP data shows no staff testing positive for the virus. This prison has seen several spikes of the virus over the past 10 months. The first case was reported in late March. In April, transmission spiked with six inmates and nine staff members testing positive. In June, four inmates and one staff member tested positive. In October one inmate tested positive. Dec 22, 2020 A person incarcerated at the state prison in Dannemora has died due to COVID-19.
According to the NYS Dept. of Corrections, the inmate who was symptomatic with COVID-19 was sent to the hospital on Dec. 8 and died on Dec. 20.
According to a prison advocacy group, Release Aging People in Prison, this was the second inmate death statewide this week linked to the pandemic.
A coalition of advocates released a statement Tuesday calling on Governor Cuomo to pass COVID-related prison reforms, including the Elder Parole bill, the Fair and Timely Parole Act, and HALT Solitary Confinement Act to save lives and prevent more needless deaths behind bars.
