SUFFOLK, Va. - There was a hub of activity at Booker T. Washington Elementary in Suffolk, where several volunteers were getting bags of food ready for a steady stream of families in need showing up for a drive-thru food giveaway.
Volunteers like Lakeland High School student Renazia Vinson say, It s fun and I like giving back - it makes me feel good.
In addition to student volunteers, there were teachers and other employees from the Suffolk Public Schools system helping hand out fresh produce and pre-packaged meals to folks who, in some cases, are facing challenges putting food on the table.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The first time we met Charlie and Cindy Silverthorn last month before Christmas, they were dressing - putting on extra layers to stay warm indoors. The heater in their Portsmouth mobile home had gone out.
They didn t have the money to get it fixed, Cindy told News 3 reporter Chelsea Donovan. If we could just get someone to help us with this heater. we don t know what to do.
Someone saw Chelsea s story and took action: The owners of Conyers Electrical Service and All Conyers Heating and Cooling. Two brothers own those businesses. One of them, Scott Conyers, says once he learned of the situation, he and his brother had to take action.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Itâs never too late to pick up a new skill.
âI picked up this a year and a half ago, and it didnât take very long.â
Eighty-nine-year-old Newport News resident Mary Gross started crocheting newborn baby hats back in March when the COVID-19 lockdown went into effect.
âIt keeps me out of mischief, she said.
And boy, has she been busy! So far, she s made nearly 300 hats - all from her home at Warwick Forest Assisted Living in Newport News.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - For eight years, Virginia Beach fifth grade teacher Stephanie Wyman has been incorporating philanthropy in her math curriculum at Woodstock Elementary. Itâs a project to deliver much-needed goods to a local homeless shelter.
âMore so than ever, the need is tremendous, and this year our house is just full. It s full of thousands of dollars worth of things that are going to help so many people, says Stephanie s husband, Rob.
âWeâve collected hygiene items, laundry, soaps, socks - lots of socks, lots of t-shirts, lots of towels.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A home on Woodland Drive in Chesapeake features the works: A wide variety of inflatables featuring your favorite characters and countless lights.
Dalton Williford admits it s a lot. When I have them all up, it s over 100,000 lights. when everything is totally up.
And when you ask what it does to his power bill? Whew! We re not discussing that, he says with a laugh.
Williford said he uses about five miles of extension cords to make the whole thing work!
Dalton and his wife, Carroll, have been doing this for about 11 year,s and he admits they don t have everything up.
