Held at the capital of Jiangsu – Nanjing – “Macao Week in Jiangsu” is the latest destination promotion activity which the Macao SAR Government put together in expanding visitor source markets to spur its economic and tourism revival.
For four days from May 14 to 17, the mega roadshow lining Nanjing Pedestrian Street presented Macao’s diverse tourism experiences and commercial opportunities to locals and visitors through its UNESCO-accredited attractions; the city’s cultural and creative industries; sporting events; MinM – Made in Macao (an intitiative supporting local products) and products from Portuguese-speaking countries; and a joint presentation by Macao’s tourism enterprises and an airline; in positioning the city as a healthy, safe and quality destination for all.

MACAO, May 25 (Xinhua) The value of Macao s retail sales for the first quarter of 2021 totaled 18.75 billion patacas (about 2.35 billion U.S. dollars), up 68.0 percent year-on-year, the special administrative region s statistic department said on Tuesday.
The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that among the major retail trade activities, sales values of communication equipment, leather goods and watches, clocks and jewelry witnessed notable year-on-year increases of 182.4 percent, 150.5 percent and 123.4 percent respectively, whereas sales value of supermarkets decreased by 17.9 percent.
As regards sales volume index, the indices of communication equipment, leather goods and watches, clocks and jewelry registered significant growth, while the index of supermarkets declined.

Bubble weariness has set in for Hong Kong’s tourism industry. After a second postponement of a travel corridor with Singapore recently, businesses are skeptical that plans to restart cross-border travel with mainland China will happen soon. Deep down, however, they fervently hope it will.
The South China Morning Post reported on Friday that borders between Hong Kong and mainland China could reopen for quarantine-free travel as early as next month, likely with neighboring Guangdong for business travel first, then other market segments.
Visitor arrivals to Macau in April – most of them from mainland China – rose 5.3 percent month-on-month, and soared by more than 7,000 percent year-on-year. It was the highest monthly tally since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in February 2020, when inbound travel to the city was greatly curtailed by the mainland authorities, as a safety step.
This April, the city received a total of 794,819 visitors for the month, with 730,934 of those – i.e., 92.0 percent – from mainland China, according to data published on Monday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service.
Mainland China is the only place to have a largely quarantine-free travel bubble with Macau, amid existing travel restrictions as countermeasures against Covid-19.
