All they needed was Saturday Night Takeaway’s Read My Lips game, a pair of headphones to muffle the noise and some bloke in Llanelli called Jamie bellowing mystery food items at Gordon via Zoom.

Deutschland 83 and Deutschland 86 does a fine job of evoking the excitement, fear and confusion of those times. As Martin tries to reassure his son, Max, that “things will be back to normal soon”, the new reformist government struggles to keep up with events and Martin’s handler Fritz (Niels Bormann) suggests he poisons the freshly installed head of state, Egon Krenz, if Krenz proves too liberal. On the plus side, there’s a potential love interest in the shape of Max’s new teacher, while elsewhere Fritz infiltrates a group of socialists.

McDonald & Dodds (ITV) is another entry in the hit parade of breezy murder mysteries that land with all the impact of cucumber sandwiches and tea from a flask.
Having overcome the challenges of shooting through Covid, the series returned in winningly silly fashion with the first of three new feature-length episodes. It found Tala Gouveia and Jason Watkins striking a cheery tone as the eponymous mismatched detectives fighting crime on the mean streets of Somerset.
