For the first time in more than a year, Jersey City school teachers returned to their schools Thursday to set up classrooms for students to make their long-awaited return on April 26.
The school district, which serves roughly 30,000 students, has begun the final countdown for reopening schools by calling in every single teacher for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic back in March 2020.
Teachers returned to make sure all technology works, all supplies like personal protective equipment are available, and to get a handle on the new format for how schools will operate when they open. Meanwhile, students spent Thursday working on scheduled assignments left by their teachers.

Freire, who works as the development director for the non-profit group Building Equity & Alignment for Impact, filed her D-1 form with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (NJ ELEC) yesterday.
For the time being, she does not have a campaign chair and will serve as her own campaign treasurer.
“Our campaign is 100 percent grassroots and is powered by people who are ready to see authentic representation on city council. My run is only a small part of a larger effort that is happening on a national scale,” she said Thursday morning.

Four years ago, Mussab Ali won a historic race.
Twenty years old at the time, Ali won a seat on the Jersey City Board of Education by 68 votes in 2017 election, becoming both the first Muslim elected to public office in Jersey City and the youngest elected official in the city’s history.
On Tuesday night, the now 23-year-old Ali was elected school board president. He is thought to be the youngest BOE president in the city’s history.
