'Homemade Astronauts'
A Portland man, Cameron Smith, is part of the new Discovery+ series "Homemade Astronauts," which is available to stream Thursday, May 13.
On the show, regular people "attempt to blast themselves into outer space," a news release says. Smith, a Portland State University anthropology professor, has created a spacesuit that can withstand all the elements of space travel with the ultimate goal of taking himself to the Armstrong line, 60,000 feet above ground. He'll use a hot-air ballon to float himself to the highest height.
Three self-financed teams are part of the program, and there'll be four episodes. Daredevil Mike "Mad Mike" Hughes and partner Waldo Stakes have built a "Rockoon" — part rocket, part balloon — to take them to the Karman line, 62 miles above Earth. And, Ky Michaelson, the first civilian to build and launch an unmanned rocket into space, has been working with his son, Buddy, and entrepreneur Kurt Anderson to build and launch a fuel-powered, manned space rocket.

'A Long Distance Affair'
Tracy Francis of Boom Arts and local actor Barbie Wu are involved in "A Long Distance Affair," a Zoom immersive play as part of a series that started before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through 10-minute plays, held Feb. 11-21, the audience learns about people from around the world; the latest version features 18 artists from Portland, Beirut (Lebanon), Lagos (Nigeria), Mumbai (India), Los Angeles and Mexico City.
It's produced by Juggerknot Theatre Company ("Miami Motel Stories") and PopUp Theatrics.
Francis directs the Beirut play, about a dance class and connection, and the Portland play, which fittingly is a sci-fi piece about protest and unrest and a woman stuck in a time loop (in which the old version kills the young version).

The McMinnville Airport show, scheduled for July 30-August 1, 2021, is still on as scheduled.
“While we believe the environment for a live outdoor event will be improving by this May, we want to exercise an abundance of caution to provide the safest environment possible for our guests, performers, volunteers and everyone in the community so we believe the best decision at this time is to postpone this year’s Hillsboro show,” said Bill Braack, president of the Oregon International Air Show said in a recent release.
The air show had attempted to move the dates later in 2021 but couldn’t find dates that worked, according to the release.
