Local COVID-19 hospitalization hits another new high; Vaccination effort enters 3rd week

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Waco hit a new high point yet again Tuesday as vaccination and vaccine distribution continued for the third week. In Waco, 1,470 people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Department of State Health Services. In the first three weeks, a total of 6,150 doses have been allocated to 18 providers in McLennan County, according to the department. Only Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center, with 600 doses, and Ascension Providence Medical Center, with 900 doses, were included in this week’s list of new allocations in the county. Allocation does not indicate delivery of the vaccines.

Texas releases distribution list for COVID-19 vaccines, sets rules on who will receive it

Texas Department of State Health Services Press Officer Douglas Loveday told 6 News the change was made to protect those most vulnerable to the virus, no matter what their job may be.  The state’s Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel felt strongly about protecting those Texans at the highest risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19. Morbidity and mortality data clearly shows that people over 65 years of age and/or with one of the chronic illnesses listed in the Phase 1b guidelines, are in greater danger of dying or ending up in the hospital, ICU or on a ventilator if they do get sick with COVID-19. By focusing on people in those categories, the vaccine will protect the most vulnerable Texans across various population and work sectors, including education and law enforcement. The press conference is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and includes updates on case counts and any possible new developments ahead of the Christmas holiday.  Here are highlights from the meeting: Dr. Jackson Griggs said the county reported 160 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday afternoon for a total of 1,168 cases. He reported an additional five deaths Wednesday as well. From the total active cases, he said 124 patients are hospitalized with the virus and 23 are on ventilators.
