COVID-19 cases are increasing in McLennan County, according to the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District (WMCPHD); reported cases are five times higher than they were last month.
With the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) being the predominant variant in the United States, making up 83.2 percent of cases, cases with the variant have been detected in McLennan County as well.
According to WMCPHD, only 41 percent of McLennan county residents are vaccinated to date, meaning there is a high risk for another surge in cases.
The health district is recommending the public, including vaccinated residents, wear masks and take protective measures.

Friday, DSHS officially launched its new vaccination campaign in at the Walmart Supercenter in Bellmead. The agency deployed a 16-foot-tall video wall in the store parking lot to play DSHS’ PSAs and interviews from local spokespeople, including pediatricians and parents.

WACO, TX â As COVID-19 cases steadily rise throughout Texas, roughly 40 percent of those over 12 years old are fully vaccinated in McLennan County.
In comparison, the state of Texas as a whole is about 52 percent vaccinated, per CDC data.
The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District is continuing to host vaccine clinics in hopes of getting a larger percentage of the population protected from the virus and its variants. It s a slow climb, but it s still a concerning climb, said the health district s communications lead, Kelly Craine. And what we know from nationwide is that the majority of people who are getting sick and getting hospitalized are not vaccinated.

Over the weekend, the U.S. hit a 20,000 daily case count of COVID-19 for the fourth day in a row.
Those are numbers we haven t seen in several months. Texas is one of 22 states seeing a steady rise in cases and hospitalizations, it s something health officials said they are seeing right here in Central Texas.
In more ways than one, it s a case of deja vu for health care professionals. We don t want any more cases; we don t want anyone more hospitalized, Kelly Craine with the Waco/McLennan County Public Health District said. Hospitalization rates are low, but it s just concerning continues to be concerning that we re seeing this uptick.
