Car crash in Mattapoisett knocks down telephone pole, causes traffic backup

The crash happened close to the Fairhaven town line near The Pines apartment complex. A Mattapoisett firefighter on scene told The Standard-Times that a blue Subaru Forester had struck a telephone pole, snapping it. The pole, still attached to support cables and active power lines, was dragged roughly 200 yards down the roadway. State and local police units, along with the Mattapoisett Fire Department and utility pole workers responded to the scene. The firefighter said power had to be cut to the electrical lines still attached to the downed pole before it could be removed. Traffic was been slowed in both directions as the scene was being cleared.
