Fireworks go on sale in Bell County on May 26

BELTON — Those celebrating Memorial Day will be able to make it more colorful and louder this year after an order by the county this week. The sale of fireworks during the days leading up to the holiday was approved by the Bell County Commissioners Court Monday in a unanimous 5-0 vote. Fireworks stands will be able to open from midnight on May 26 to May 31 to sell their products. County Judge David Blackburn said Texas normally allows the sale of fireworks around New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July but the county can allow the sale at other times of the year.

Sheriff s deputies increase Bell lake patrols | Region

BELTON — The Bell County Sheriff’s Department is stepping up its monitoring of local lakes — beginning this month. As the department has done in the past during its summer lake program, deputies will focus on patrolling the county’s two lakes — Lake Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The patrols are in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the two Bell County lakes and contracts with the county for the law enforcement. Lt. Bob Reinhard, Sheriff’s Department spokesman, said deputies will watch the lakes similar to areas they will normally patrol, hoping to show a presence to discourage reckless or dangerous behavior.

Commissioners approve final plat for 39 Salado area homes

BELTON — Construction of more than three dozen new homes east of Salado have been green lit, following the approval of the final plat by county officials. The Bell County Commissioners Court unanimously decided Monday morning to approve the final plat for phase nine of the Mill Creek Springs subdivision. The subdivision includes a more than 25 acre tract with 39 lots on it. County Engineer Bryan Neaves said the subdivision includes about half of a mile worth of new roads that will be dedicated to the county. “The plat shows that they have dedicated right of way on these new roads to be accepted as county roads,” Neaves said. “They have been built to the county standards or better.”

Serving the needy: Temple, Killeen clinics report on indigent health care efforts

BELTON — Half a year after coming to an agreement with the county, representatives from two local community clinics gave their first status report to the Bell County Commissioners Court. Representatives from the Temple Community Clinic and the Greater Killeen Community Clinic told the county last week how the facilities have performed over the past year to provide health care to indigent residents. The county and the clinics entered into an agreement last October to administer services for the county’s Indigent Health Care program. County Judge David Blackburn said that the county held the meeting to make sure the new program and its services were on track.
