Temple, Killeen men die from COVID-19 as Bell toll rises to 413

The county saw two new COVID-19 related deaths Thursday according to the Bell County Public Health District. Dr. Amanda Robison-Chadwell, director of the district, said the two new deaths included a man in his 80s from Temple and a man in his 40s from Killeen. These deaths bring the county’s total to 413. The district also reported seeing a slight increase in the incidence rate of the virus with 87.5 cases per 100,000 people, an increase over yesterday’s 86.5 cases per 100,000. Robison-Chadwell said the county currently has 318 active COVID-19 cases, with 21,679 cases and 20,948 recoveries overall. The district also announced that it would discontinue its Friday updates to the dashboard, only updating Monday through Thursday.

Some people who have received their 1 st dose of the vaccine through the Bell County Public Health District told 25 News they re having trouble scheduling their second dose appointment. It’s an issue the county is working to address. “I have spoken to a few people who have had this problem we are definitely aware of it at the county level. Regardless of how this has happened our priority is to figure out how best to serve the people who are having trouble getting that second appointment right now,” said James Stafford, Bell County’s Public Information Officer.

Temple ISD plans in-person classes only for fall

The Temple Independent School District announced on Tuesday that it will exclusively offer in-person learning for the 2021-22 academic school year. Temple ISD Superintendent Bobby Ott — who noted that the decision followed consultation with the Bell County Public Health District — said about 88 percent of Temple ISD’s students are currently enrolled for on-campus instruction. “Remote instruction has proven to be a far lesser option to in-person learning, in particular for our younger students,” he said in a news release. “Our data shows that students who were enrolled in on-campus learning out-performed their remote learning peers across the board.” The third-year superintendent cited an increase in student failure rates across his district.
