Nitrogen is essential for crops, but when it gets into the water supply, it spells big trouble. Scientists are trying to help farmers strike the right balance by measuring their fields.
April 28, 2021 – For years it’s been relatively easy to measure pollution from, say, a factory. At a factory, there might be just one pipe of waste to measure. Easy enough.
But what about a farm? We might not typically think of farms as sources of pollution. But they can have big impacts on the land over time. Unlike at a factory, the waste filters slowly through soil across the whole plot of land.

April 19, 2021 MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University alumnus Todd Steinacher has been around the world to teach better farming practices, which has led to him being named the 2021 International Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) of the Year.
Steinacher, a 2006 graduate of WIU s School of Agriculture, is an agronomist for the AgriGold seed company, and provides agronomic support to farmers in west central and southwest Illinois. He was named the Illinois CCA of the Year in 2020, and AgriGold Agronomist of the Year in 2018.
The international award was announced during the American Society of Agronomy s March CCA webinar. It will be presented at the American Society of Agronomy-Crop Science Society of America-Soil Science Society of America international annual meeting later this year.

The University of Delaware s Donald Sparks, Unidel S. Hallock du Pont Chair in Plant and Soil Sciences and director of the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN), has won the 2021 Philippe Duchaufour Medal given by the European Geosciences Union.
EGU s Soil System Sciences Division established the award for distinguished contributions to soil science, defined in its widest sense.
Sparks has been a global leader in environmental soil chemistry for more than 30 years.
