Hall County inmate accused of stabbing jail officer with a pen
A Braselton woman in the Hall County Jail allegedly stabbed an officer in the face with an ink pen, according to authorities.
Leann Strangler Smith, 42, has been in the jail since Jan. 2 on a State Court arrest order but is now facing charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and obstruction of an officer.
The arrest order concerns an ongoing State Court case with charges including criminal trespass and misdemeanor obstruction, according to the Hall County Courts docket website.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth said Smith was allegedly uncooperative during a routine pill call, which is when inmates receive medications, between 4-5 p.m. Friday, April 9, in the inmate pod.

A Gainesville man was given time on house arrest and probation after prosecutors dismissed a kidnapping charge and negotiated a plea on other charges, according to court documents.
Russell Olin Layton, 54, was given a 12-year sentence with the first two years in confinement, according to court documents.
There were two indictments filed in October 2018 in Hall County Superior Court. The first alleged kidnapping, false imprisonment and battery involving a woman in August 2016.
The second indictment had charges including aggravated stalking, influencing a witness, terroristic threats and terroristic acts involving the same woman months later.

Weeks before his murder trial, an East Point man has been charged with three counts of misdemeanor obstruction of officers, according to court documents.
DeMarvin Ladele Bennett, 26, was charged in an April 1 accusation in State Court.
Bennett was originally charged more than two years ago in the Feb. 7, 2019, fatal shooting of Jack Hough on Park Hill Drive. He was indicted later that month on charges including malice murder.
Defense attorney Matt Leipold confirmed to The Times Tuesday, April 6, that Bennett’s murder trial is still set for April 26.

The court system is moving to eCourt by Journal Technology, which is expected to go live June 1. Courts coordinator Margie Reed-Payne said the product is a browser-based software that will be a “digital recordkeeper of all calendars, filings, documents and financials.”
