The SLFP is no stranger to internal disputes and crippling breakaways. Its history is full of such instances which have cost it dear electorally. Its prolonged stay in the Opposition from 1977 to 1994 was due to internecine clashes among its leaders including the members of the Bandaranaike family. Its intraparty rivalries have surfaced again.
The SLFP is in a dilemma. We thought SLPP MP and former President Maithripala Sirisena was its undisputed Chairman. But now we are told that it has two heads. Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga insists that she is the legitimate Chairperson of the party her late father founded.

That these ugly forces will inevitably go beyond the point of control with catastrophic effects is now a near-certainty.
A misbegotten witchdoctor and his portion
Already the signs of impending catastrophe are manifest. How is it that a witch doctor from Kegalle touting an untested ‘cure’ for covid19 was able to berate the Chief Priest of the Atamasthanaya at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, one of the most venerated sites for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, when he was not allowed to peddle his tonic at the Bodhi. His ranting, ‘I am Kali and I am your mother’ to the head priest was sheer gripping drama albeit of a spectacularly hideous kind. But the point is that he did this and got away unscathed.

He justified the need for an international inquiry and international judicial process to look into serious crimes committed in this country which has an impact on international law. In order to drive home his point, he alluded to several instances and, euphemistically made reference to the “depths to which your judicial system has sunk”. As a recent example he cited Mr. Hejaaz Hizbullah, an Attorney at Law who is currently in detention. Mr. M.A. Sumanthiran said, “a brilliant young lawyer denied justice for eight months. All kinds of false allegations were made against him.” Further, he drew attention to the fact that if there were any grounds for prosecution, they sho
