Charlotte breweries partner to diversity craft beer industry

Black people drink beer, too : Charlotte breweries pushing for more diversity in craft beer A group of Charlotte brewery owners are teaming up to create more diversity in a booming industry currently dominated by white males. Author: Billie Jean Shaw Updated: 7:29 AM EDT April 7, 2021 CHARLOTTE, N.C. The craft beer industry is a staple in many cities but there are some major disparities when it comes to ownership of these businesses.  Did you know that out of nearly 9,000 breweries nationwide only 1% of them are Black-owned? A few local Charlotte people are working very hard to change that.  The group includes Lashae Johnson, a Black woman, who started her journey to own a brewery. She recently discussed her business with WCNC Charlotte s Billie Jean Shaw in the most recent For The Culture feature.

Craft Beer Production and Sales Down in 2020 but Closures Limited

Craft breweries across the country made 23.1 million barrels of beer in 2020, about 9 percent less than in 2019, while total sales declined a whopping 22 percent, to $22.2 billion, according to the Brewers Association. It was the first production decline since the BA started tracking sale and volume numbers in the 1980s. Despite that punch in the face, only 346 breweries closed nationwide, or 4 percent of the industry, on par with the previous year. In the meantime, 716 new breweries opened, so despite the effects of the pandemic, there is now an all-time high of 8,764 beer makers in existence, with around a thousand more still in planning.

Are pubs about to get MUCH cheaper? Calls for beer tax to be reduced by 50 per cent

Beer producers are calling for huge tax cuts to help struggling pubs following crippling Covid-19 lockdowns. The Brewers Association is calling for Scott Morrison to slash the draught beer tax in half, a move that could save a small pub $465 each week.  That saving could be passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices or used to pay down debt and keep the pub alive, said chief executive John Preston.
