HC deplores lethargic attitude of government officials

Expressing shock over the fact that the compensation amount for the land acquired 54 years ago for the bus depot in Palani was yet to be settled, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday observed that neither the government nor its officials were interested in the welfare of the citizens and honoured the orders of the court.
Justice R. Subramanian observed that,“This can happen only in this country and with these government officials”. It demonstrated how lethargic, indifferent and cruel the government officials were in dealing with the rights of the citizens, the judge said and observed that if the entire balance compensation was not deposited by the Dindigul Collector by March 25, the Collector will have to appear before the court on March 26.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday dismissed as withdrawn a petition that sought a ban on COVID-19 vaccine claiming that it had side effects.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and S.Ananthi observed that the petition was absolutely irrelevant. The petition was filed by G. Thirumurugan of Ramanathapuram. After the counsel representing the petitioner apologised to the court, he was permitted to withdraw the petition.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday expunged certain remarks made on Higher Education Secretary Apoorva by a single judge bench.
The judge had made the remark while quashing a recruitment notification issued by Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, that treated the entire university as one unit for applying reservation policy.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and S. Ananthi expunged the remarks and observed that the adverse remarks were not necessary. The court was hearing an appeal preferred by the Vice-Chancellor of the university. The appeal against the single judge order was dismissed as not pressed.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday ordered notice to the Centre in a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to implement the guidelines issued by the Press Council of India to media outlets to follow in reporting cases on deaths by suicide.
Action must be taken against media outlets that fail to follow guidelines, the petitioner said.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and S. Ananthi ordered the notice in the petition filed by I. Mohamed Razvi of Madurai. Pointing out to several recent incidents, particularly on the coverage of NEET, the petitioner said that politicians and media outlets in the State had created an impression as if it would spoil the future of students and was tough.
Clarity sought over how many times Indian currency was devalued

A group of police aspirants preferred a writ appeal before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday against a single bench order that had concluded that the Indian currency was devalued thrice since 1947. The single bench had directed 0.5 marks be awarded to two petitioners who had challenged the expert committee’s answer: four times.
The contention was the answer to the question: How many times the Indian rupee was devalued since 1947 ? that was asked in the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board examination. While in the preliminary answer key it was given out as three times, subsequently in the final answer key it was given out as four times by the expert committee.
