FDA issue an alert on Pet Food recall for product shipped to NM

LAS CRUCES – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has issued an alert regarding a pet food recall. On Dec. 30, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. announced a recall of certain lots of Sportmix pet food products. On Jan. 11, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. expanded the recall to include additional products not just Sportmix that contain corn and were made in the company’s Oklahoma manufacturing plant. The recalled products may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins. The FDA is working with several state departments of agriculture to investigate these products. While the New Mexico Department of Agriculture is unaware of any reports of affected pets in New Mexico, recalled pet food has been identified in the state.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in cooperation with the state departments of agriculture for Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington, is investigating certain pet food products manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. that may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins.  On January 11, 2021, Midwestern Pet Foods the recall to include additional products that contain corn and were made in their Oklahoma manufacturing plant. These include Sportmix, Pro Pac and Nunn pet foods and Splash Fat Cat fish foods that were made in the firm’s Oklahoma plant and that expire on or before July 9, 2022.

(MPF) following the recall of nearly two dozen cat, dog, and fish food products contaminated with aflatoxins, which result from mold growth. The consumers charge the Evansville, Indiana-based pet food manufacturer with negligence, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, unjust enrichment, and violations of business and consumer protection laws. Thursday’s complaint recounts how on Dec. 30, 2020, the defendant announced a recall on three of its “Sportmix” cat and dog food products explaining that test results revealed unacceptably high levels of aflatoxins. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) subsequently published news about the defendant’s recall and reported that several dogs had fallen ill or died after consuming MPF’s Sportmix products.
