“We have had better percentages in tribal districts than urban areas,” Chhattisgarh health minister T S Singh Deo told ET. “The highest vaccination targets have been met in LWE-affected Sukma at 86%. Even Bastar has recorded vaccination higher than the state average at 60-65%. This is better than our urban centres like Raipur and Bilaspur.” All states have reported a similar trend, which is contrary to the perception that rural districts would have lower vaccination due to connectivity and accessibility issues. “The vaccination percentages are much higher in rural and tribal-dominated districts at 80% as compared to urban districts at an average of 50%,” Madhya Pradesh National Health Mission director Chhavi Bharadwaj said. “The reason is a certain degree of scepticism due to information flow in urban centres. People have raised safety concerns and have been apprehensive about the new vaccines. But in rural areas there is in general better vaccination uptake.”
