This was met with heavy resistance by duly registered small-scale miners. Successive governments, specifically over the last two decades, have made efforts to clamp down on the menace, but it is clear that illegal miners have a stronger will and have become more creative in sustaining their activities.
Weak implementation and the lack of enforcement of laws remain the biggest challenges in the fight against illegal mining. An Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) was set up by President Akufo-Addo in 2017 to ensure coherence in the activities of agencies involved in the fight.
In July 2017, the government commissioned an anti-galamsey task force made up of a 400-member strong military and associated security agency called Operation Vanguard.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Tuesday held a meeting with directors of the Ministry and asked them to exhibit loyalty, transparency and teamwork at all levels.
That, he said, would help to solve the many challenges confronting the land and natural resource sector.
It would also ensure that government efficiently achieved its mandate over the next four years, he said.
Mr Jinapor, also the Member of Parliament for Damongo in the Savannah Region, at the maiden meeting, said: In me you will find a Minister who is very supportive .
He explained that he would try his best to ensure that all the staff enjoyed their work and contributed their quota towards national growth and development.
I’m not involved in galamsey activities - Adansi North DCE
By Evans Boateng Listen to article
The Adansi North District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Eric Kwaku Kusi has rubbished allegations leveled against him in a New Crusading Guide Newspaper publication that he is involved in illegal mining (galamsay) activities in the area.
He said the publication in question was purported by his opponents eyeing the DCE position to tarnish his name as well as his integrity.
According to him, Adansi North District is one of the areas designated for community mining.
“….they believe I (DCE) didn’t support Fomena independent candidates but rather the defeated NPP MP aspirant hence they will do anything possible to mar the relationship between me and the current MP who happens to be the independent candidates,” he told Evans Boateng in an interview.
President Akufo-Addo is expected in the course of the week to release the list of persons to serve as ministers and deputy ministers in the second term of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
