SNP demands Boris Johnson pays Brexit compensation to Scotland

© Andrew Parsons / No10 Downing St Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Boris Johnson has been told to “pay compensation to Scotland”, as Brexit disruption begins to bite for Scottish firms. Hundreds of businesses including retailers Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Fortnum and Mason were hit by Brexit red-tape at the borders last week. Scottish seafood exporters were also impacted, with new systems of bureaucracy and IT problems causing shipments to be spoiled. With Westminster to return from recess on Monday, SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford has called on the UK Government to make provision for a multi-billion-pound compensation package to mitigate the costs to Scotland’s businesses and economy.

SCF blasts Brexit deal as an inadequate stitch-up

Crofting at Lochbroom SCOTLAND S CROFTING Federation has blasted the last minute Brexit deal with the EU as an inadequate stitch-up . The organisation has thrown its support behind the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament’s decision to decline consent for the trade deal. “It is clear that there is a ‘hard Brexit’ deal which is significantly inadequate and will have a detrimental impact on Scottish food-growing, a very EU-dependent sector, said chair of the SCF, Yvonne White. For example, negative impacts on live animal sales are predicted, with an increase in paperwork for buyers and hauliers. The producer will bear the brunt of the increased cost of sale, which could make hill lamb farming totally uneconomic. We are worried about supplies of inputs such as pharmaceuticals, and vegetable seed suppliers are already warning of shortages, which will affect croft vegetable production.

Progress will be reviewed on February 15 from which restrictions could be slowly lifted.
