Hiking Guide: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock is one of the more popular parks and landmarks in the Texas Hill Country, and for good reason. The massive pink granite dome that is the centerpiece of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is awe-inspiring and visible from many miles away. Rising about 425 feet above the surrounding terrain to an elevation of 1,825 feet above sea level, it’s the largest pink granite monadnock in the United States.
As such, Enchanted Rock is one of my favorite places to visit whether for a hike, to shoot photos, or just for the scenic drive. And I’m not alone: people have been visiting this area for thousands of years, attracted to its size and beauty. Archeological evidence indicates human presence as far back as 12,000 years ago, and local Tonkawa, Apache and Comanche tribe folklore attributes magical and spiritual powers to the geological formation hence its mystical name.

Located just over an hour from both Austin and San Antonio, Fredericksburg is home to wide open spaces and spring beauty. Take time to unwind with a bike ride around town or sign up with a local bike tour company to take on the hills around the town, which are frequent training grounds for professional cyclists. Well-known Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a fantastic location to take in the Texas Hill Country, but be sure to book park passes online well in advance to guarantee entry (the park is very popular in the spring and often reaches capacity). Other opportunities to soak up the sunshine include a self-guided historic walking tour in the National Historic District, a relaxed hike at Cross Mountain Park or along the walking trail at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, or a round of golf with Texas Hill Country views at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course.
