April is Autism Acceptance Month. WNIJ talked to a Rockford couple who said music helped their son after his diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
Some children show signs of being on the spectrum as early as 12 months old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Alan and Charlotte Abanes say their son David was about 15 months old when they noticed a decline in his speaking.
“All of a sudden we had just a setback. We had his hearing tested at the time,” Charlotte said. “That was fine. So, we started speech therapy then. But we didn t have a diagnosis until he was probably [in] kindergarten.”
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. â SUNY Empire State College, in partnership with Anderson Center for Autism, hosted a month-long celebration of autistic and neurodiverse artists in Expressive Outcomes, a virtual art gallery.
The gallery exhibit, part of the college s Autism Acceptance and Inclusivity Month, gave artists of all abilities the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent in an inclusive setting.
On April 13, the gallery held its opening event, moderated by Dr. Noor Syed, director of the SUNY Empire Center for Autism Inclusivity, with featured guests Eliza Bozenski, chief development officer at Anderson Center for Autism, Susan Angeles, a founder of the Expressive Outcomes program at Anderson and Dr. Pamala Rogers, director of expressive art programs for The Shield Institute and its Pure Vision Arts program in New York City.

April is Autism Acceptance month or National Autism Awareness Month. This month is designated to promote awareness of autism and autism spectrum disorders and shine light on the unique abilities that people with autism bring.
Autism is a neurological condition that is typically diagnosed by the age of three, but may be diagnosed later in life. Children with autism, just like any other child, vary significantly and display a wide range of conditions. Autism often affects a person’s communication abilities, impact social skills, nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism is known as a spectrum disorder and people with autism each have a unique experience with their own challenges and strengths.
