Birchtree Center of Portsmouth for kids with autism visited by Sununu

Portsmouth Herald PORTSMOUTH Gov. Chris Sununu has proclaimed April to be Autism Awareness Month in New Hampshire. On April 16, Sununu visited the state’s only school that enrolls students with autism exclusively. The nonprofit Birchtree Center, established in 2002, moved its school from Newington to a new facility in Portsmouth this January. “It’s great to see Birchtree’s students and staff work as a team,” said Sununu. “Their dedication is creating amazing opportunities for our families.” Birchtree’s Executive Director Sandra Pierce-Jordan showed how classroom spaces had been customized for students with autism ranging from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. “One student may do best surrounded by pictures of his favorite composers,” said Pierce-Jordan, “while a student with impaired vision may require an area that’s easier to navigate by touch.”
