April is National Autism Awareness Month. Nationally, 1 in 58 children are diagnosed with autism. In Minnesota, some say it may be as high as 1 in 42.
What is autism?
When people refer to autism today, they are usually talking about the Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD. That encompasses four complex, brain-based disorders that affect a person’s behavior as well as social and communication skills. Those four disorders are: autistic disorder, childhood disintegrating disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PPD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome.
Abstract
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are increasingly being educated in mainstream classroom environments. Commonly students commence their education in a segregated setting, transitioning to mainstream education after a process of skills development. For each student, transition is a unique and complex process. In NSW Australia, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) offers a satellite classroom placement, in which students are provided with specialised education with the goal of future transition supported by the Aspect transition programme. This article examines the successes and difficulties experienced by three primary school students who transitioned from an Aspect satellite classroom to a mainstream classroom environment during primary school. For many people who have procrastinated, panic sets in during the middle of this month most years as they scramble to file their state and federal tax returns by the usual date of April 15.
But 2021, much like 2020, isn’t like most years. Your federal and state tax returns aren’t due Thursday, thanks to a time extension of a little over a month.
The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced last month the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year was extended from April 15 to Monday, May 17. The Georgia Department of Revenue made the same filing date change.
Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Launches Sensory Bag Program
ST. CLOUD April is Autism Awareness Month, and one local law enforcement agency is launching a new program aimed at easing interactions with people with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Alzheimer’s disease.
Last week, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office handed out 75 sensory bags to officers to keep in their cars and placed them at several county buildings including the courthouse, the administration building, and the license center.
