The update comes a day before a two-week suspension on flights from India into New Zealand comes into effect. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the suspension on Thursday, saying it was necessary to stop New Zealand’s managed isolation facilities from being overwhelmed with cases. The Government would be looking at why so many people coming from India are testing positive on arrival, despite receiving negative pre-departure tests, she said. But the Human Rights Commission said the Government needs to be more transparent about the decision, as it is a “significant limitation” on New Zealand citizens’ and residents’ right to freedom of movement.

New Zealand s Human Rights Commission is calling for more transparency after the Government decided to temporarily ban arrivals from India.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ordered flights from India to be suspended from Sunday 4pm until April 28.
The number of COVID-19 cases in managed isolation has spiked over the recent weeks and a large proportion of those come from India. I want to emphasise that while arrivals with COVID from India have prompted this measure, we are looking at how we manage high-risk points of departure generally, Ardern said on Thursday.
The Human Rights Commission wants the government to justify temporarily stopping people arriving home from India.

Flights will be put on hold from Sunday, after almost two-thirds of the Covid-19 cases detected in managed isolation over the past 30 days came from India.
Chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt said more information was needed on the reasons behind the suspension, which will be in place from 11 April to 28 April.
It is the first time New Zealand has stopped citizens or residents from returning.
