Compliance with commitments on child rights stressed Islamabad May 28, 2021 Islamabad : Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) with the support of Save the Children organised a Seminar on ‘Pakistan’s International Commitments and compliance with Child Rights’ on Thursday. Afshan Tehseen Bajwa, Chairperson National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) shared that NCRC has been set up to make recommendations for effective implementation of policies related to children and recommend the Federal Government to sign, ratify or accede to any proposed International Treaties and Protocols in the best interest of children. She further added that although the commission has started only recently it has an integral role to play for promotion of child rights in Pakistan.

According to Dawn, in the last hearing, the two-judge bench had issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of Interior Secretary Yousuf Nasim Khokhar as well as show-cause notices against him in several petitions of missing persons for consistently violating court orders by not filing information from the internment centres in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regarding missing persons.

(Photo: AFP) A Catholic bishop has joined human rights activists in rejecting a controversial bill that seeks to make marriage compulsory for people aged 18 in Pakistan. The Sharia-based Sindh Compulsory Marriage Act, 2021, states that the parents of an adult who is not being married off after turning 18 will have to submit an undertaking with a justified reason for the delay before the deputy commissioner of their district. They could also face a fine of 500 rupees (US$3.22) for each of their unmarried children.
