Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan on Saturday blasted the government move to reduce funding for his office, considering the recently proposed legal initiative as a discriminatory tool restricting their functions.
According to him, the bill for cutting down the budgetary allocations for the Ombudsman s Office essentially narrows the scope of their independent work. The Government of Armenia has initiated a bill potentially nullifying the independence of Human Rights Defender s Office from the Government, and the governing faction in the National Assembly. The political authorities can now cut down the funding for our institution [in an effort to prevent us from] raising different problems, he told a news conference.
