The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has said it has launched investigations into the alleged police shooting of the Polytechnic Student the late Blessing Nyondo.
âFollowing media reports and the public outcry into the fatal shooting of a Polytechnic Student, Blessings Nyondo, by allegedly police and security officers on 31 December 2020 and subsequent death on 8 January 2020, the commission has commenced investigations into the same,â read part of the statement.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by MHRC Executive Secretary Habiba Osman said the Commission already started preliminary investigations before Nyondo died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
âThe public may also wish to note that when reports of the fatal shooting emerged, the commission decided to conduct a preliminary independent investigation into the matter,â the statement added.

Local Government Minister Lingson Berekanyama and Transport Minister Sidik Mia both succumbed to the disease in the early hours of Tuesday.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Ernest Kantchentche, also died of the disease, the government announced.
Writing on his Facebook page, Mutharika says there is need to join hands in the fight against Covid-19 irrespective of differences that exist.

Nyondo has sadly succumbed to bullets wounds.
He was shot multiple times around Kwacha roundabout in Blantyre on the night of the 31st of December 2020 allegedly by a police officer assigned to the public broadcaster – Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
HRDC chairperson Gift Trapence, in a statementsays it is unbelievable, outright insensitive, and incoherent of the Malawi Police Service to feed the nation a narrative that the late Blessings was a robbery suspect.
Minister of National Unity and Civic Education Timothy Mtambo has challenged people with intentions to sabotage and frustrate the administration of President Lazarus Chakwera and Tonse Alliance that they will âlabor in vainâ
Mtambo wrote this on his official Facebook page saying that it is the message he has received from God.
The leader of Citizen for Transformation People Power Movement further added that God will see through people of Malawi and any ill mind from other people will not be effected.
âThe spirit of the Lord tells me that anybody with an agenda to sabotage the leadership of President Chakwera and the Tonse Administration will labor in vain. Mark my words God will see us through as a people. No amount of propaganda and sabotage is going to work,â Mtambo said.

Two weeks ago, Malawi government signed the extradition papers to begin the process of extraditing Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, to South Africa.
The South African government had earlier written Malawi government requesting the extradition of the two, who–facing fraud and money laundering charges–left the rainbow nation citing security reasons and, also, because they were certain they would never get a fair trial.
The public reaction to the news that Malawi government had, finally, signed the extradition papers was somehow of a shock to many.
