The High Court in Lilongwe has given Brussels-bound ambassadorial appointee, Reverend McDonald Sembereka up to 22 July this year to apologise to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) senior official, Ben Phiri over an allegation that Phiri was involved in the petrol bombing of the then HRDC Chairperson, Timothy Mtambo’s house in 2019. The court has convicted and ordered Sembereka to pay a sum of K800,000 in legal costs. Rev Sembereka: Told to swallow his pride and apologise to Ben Phiri What led the whole saga prior to elections was that some people bombed part of HRDC Chairperson, Timothy Pagonachi Mtambo’s residence in Area 3 in the capital, Lilongwe, damaging vehicles packed there but luckily, Mtambo escaped unscathed in the botched-up the assassination attempt.

Members of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) including National Coordinator Luke Tembo, Reverend MacDonald Sembereka, Billy Mayaya and Happy were on Wednesday and Thursday spotted among the over 50 newly appointed diplomats attending an orientation workshop at the Bingu International Convention Centre in the capital Lilongwe; and, this is barely a month after Nyasa Times had published government’s intent to annihilate the militant rights body. Chakwera finally rewards militant group HRDC leaders with ambassadorial post Chakwera finally rewards militant group HRDC leaders with ambassadorial post LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has finally rewarded three top members of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) who led a violet and blood-shed demonstrations prior to 2020 elections re-run. The three are among 40 newly appointed Deputy High Commissioners, Ambassadors and other diplomats. The three are Luke Tembo, Billy Mayaya and MacDonald Sembereka. Sembereka however insisted on local radio that their appointments do not mean that activism has ended saying they are now part of systems meant to further other human rights.
