The Human Rights Campaign Files Amicus Brief in Support of Texas LGBTQ Workers

shutterstock.com WASHINGTON The  Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay,  bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, filed  a brief as amicus curaie, or “friend of the court,” to the Texas 5th  Circuit Court of Appeals.  The case, Tarrant County Community College v. Sims,  addresses the scope of protections against discrimination for LGBTQ  workers under Texas state law. HRC is represented on the brief and in  oral argument by Winston & Strawn LLP.  According to a press release, this  is the first opportunity for a Texas state appeals court to interpret  the Texas Commission on Human Relations Act (TCHRA) after the recent  U.S. Supreme Court decision Bostock v. Clayton County that  determined discrimination against employees on the basis of sexual  orientation and gender identity is a form of sex discrimination  prohibited by federal law.

The new laws bars same-sex couples from adopting children in Hungary. “The Hungarian Parliament has blatantly and maliciously attacked the human rights of LGBTQ people and their families,” said Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President. “These measures are discriminatory and leaders in Hungary must right this wrong by reversing these antiquated and harmful laws.” Only married couples in Hungary are permitted to adopt children with exceptions made for single people previously providing a pathway for same-sex couples. Human Rights Day is an annual celebration commemorating the United Nations ratifying the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, laying the groundwork for a set of global, inalienable rights.

The Human Rights Campaign Honors Human Rights Day with Grants to Global LGBTQ Advocates Today, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation is commemorating Human Rights Day by announcing the launch of a Global Small Grants Program, which is supporting 20 initiatives to advance the human rights of LGBTQ people in 17 countries. HRC is also joining a public campaign with other advocates calling on Nigerian President Mahammadu Buhari to take action against ongoing human rights abuses in Nigeria. Human Rights Day marks the date in 1948 when the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, that was the first time the global community spelled out a set of inalienable rights everyone is entitled to, including LGBTQ people.
