A number of healthcare networks are joining Northwell Health in recognizing gun violence as a public health crisis. In a new interactive forum, they aim to bring about best practices to prevent firearm injury and death, and leave politics out of their discussions.
The forum is part of Northwell’s recently launched Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Health Systems and Hospitals.
Joining the initiative are more than 300 representatives from CommonSpirit Health, University of Chicago Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Medical Center, and other hospitals and health systems. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards held his State of the State address Monday, April 12, from A.W. Mumford Stadium on the campus of Southern University.
Gov. Edwards, discussed several topics including advocating for lawmakers to raise the minimum wage, pay increase for K-12 teachers and support staff, Early Childhood Education and proposing an office within the governor’s office to fight human trafficking.

Edwards outlines legislative agenda
Gov. John Bel Edwards announced his agenda Thursday for the legislative session that starts Monday, including his support for making kindergarten mandatory for every Louisiana student.
The estimated cost of the change to the state’s multibillion education budget is $12 million or less. The proposal is in line with lawmakers’ recent emphasis on early childhood education, though critics believe the mandate infringes on families’ right to make that decision for themselves.
Senate Bill 10 by Sen. Cleo Fields, a Baton Rouge Democrat who chairs the Senate Education Committee, would require mandatory kindergarten attendance beginning at age 5. Children could satisfy the requirement through public or private school or homeschooling, Edwards said.
