January 2021: Human Trafficking Awareness Month
WHEREAS, according to the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, there were 22,326 victims and survivors of human trafficking identified in 2019; and,
WHEREAS, human trafficking, in the forms of labor trafficking and sex trafficking, is a pervasive and exploitative crime occurring in communities across Michigan, throughout the United States, and around the world; and,
WHEREAS, the state of Michigan recognizes human trafficking as a serious threat to the public health and safety of its residents, particularly for the most vulnerable; and,
WHEREAS, ending human trafficking requires an intricate, multi-faceted, statewide solution that includes health care providers, social workers, child advocacy groups, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, legislators, and the judiciary system; and,

TRUSSVILLE The Trussville City Council met five days early for its last meeting of the month, on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020. The council held its workshop and meeting on the same night.
The council passed a proclamation establishing that January 2021 will be Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Trussville.
Julia Meyers, with the Junior League of Birmingham, addressed the council about the importance of enhancing public welfare and awareness of human trafficking. Meyers said human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery.
