Michigan AG office updates human trafficking webpage

LANSING, Mich. â Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Tuesday announced a major update to her officeâs human trafficking website.
The update includes resources and information for the general public, law enforcement and survivors of human trafficking, in addition to detailing the departmentâs efforts to prosecute human traffickers.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer had proclaimed January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month on Tuesday morning.
âAs part of our continued efforts to provide valuable information to the public, we undertook these important revisions to our human trafficking webpage,â Nessel said. âThese updates provide more detailed information on human trafficking, the important work of the Commission and our efforts to eradicate these horrible crimes.â
–January 2021 is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and to assist the community to learn more about this tragic criminal enterprise, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office and Cal Poly’s California Cybersecurity Institute have teamed up to offer free online presentations to the community on Jan. 19 & 20 from 11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. each day.
These presentations will bring a variety of local experts together to offer information on human trafficking as well as resources for victims and survivors.
“Human Trafficking is modern-day slavery right here and we must do everything we can to eliminate it from our community,” said Dan Dow, District Attorney. “Our SLO County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force is making a significant impact in reducing the occurrence in our county and I am grateful for the great partnerships we have. A native of the Florence area, Allie Brooks earned a bachelor’s degree and a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army from South Carolina State University in 1968. Afterwards, he received a master’s degree in Education Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1974 and Education Specialist Degree in 2014. He completed the Institute on the Principal and School Improvement in 1987 at Harvard University. In 2006, he was awarded an honorary degree from Francis Marion University. He serves on the Board of Trustees of McLeod Health.
He has served as president of the S.C. Association of Secondary School Principals (SCASSP), the 4-A Principals Conference, and the S.C. High School League. Brooks was named Outstanding Principal of the Year in 1986-87 and 2000 by the SCASSP.

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County will be increasing awareness of the Look Beneath the Surface campaign from the Federal Office on Trafficking in Persons with support from the Department of Health and Human Services. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking awareness month.
This year the Department will host a webinar to increase awareness and educate the community on this important public health concern. During this webinar, you will learn what human trafficking is about, what it may look like, and how you can help report a trafficking situation.
At this event, we will have two expert speakers in the field of human trafficking. The speakers for this event will be Ivon Mesa from Community Action and Human Services Department of Miami-Dade County and Marta Martinez from Kristi House, Project GOLD.
