Black lives matter, and so does Black mental health. The Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health reports that African Americans are 10 percent more likely to experience serious psychological distress. At the same time, only 30 percent of African American adults with mental illnesses get help each year, which is below the U.S. average of 43 percent.
Racism and racial trauma continue to affect the mental well-being of Black people, who already face so many obstacles when it comes to receiving mental health treatment. As the National Alliance on Mental Illness stated, “Racism is a public health crisis.”
A screening of the documentary Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools is set for next Wednesday (Feb. 24). According to the library s website, the film takes a close look at the educational, judicial and societal disparities facing Black girls.
Throughout the entire month, the library is also offering a Black Lives Matter sign-making activity for youth and teens. We re definitely going to be doing more programs for racial justice and Black history throughout the year, Sevilla said. Atlanta Links holds virtual safe-space meeting to address race, racism, and violence.
ATLANTA - The Buckhead Cascade City chapter of the Links has opened its virtual portal for a conversation about race, racism, and violence Tuesday.
The virtual talk was intended to explore violence against Black people. It quickly developed into a training ground for how to have difficult conversations with young people of color, community relationships with police, and how to handle racial bias. We are a village, we have to help each other, clinical consultant Janie Francis Asante said.
