The new strain may already be in the US undetected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
No cases of it have yet been identified, the CDC reported, but viruses have been sequenced from only about 51,000 of the 17 million US cases.
Travel between the two countries and the prevalence of the new strain in the UK boost the chance it is already in the US, the CDC reported.
Moncef Slaoui, chief scientific adviser to Operation Warp Speed, said on Monday that it would take weeks to determine scientifically if the strain is more transmissible but that it didn’t appear to be any more dangerous.

WASHINGTON (AP) Pfizer said Wednesday it will supply the U.S. government with an additional 100 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine under a new agreement between the pharmaceutical giant and the Trump administration.
Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech said that will bring their total current commitment to 200 million doses for the U.S. That should be enough to vaccinate 100 million people with the two-shot regimen. The government also has an option to purchase an additional 400 million doses.
“This new federal purchase can give Americans even more confidence that we will have enough supply to vaccinate every American who wants it by June 2021,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar in a statement. The cost to taxpayers: $1.95 billion for the additional 100 million doses.

Dec. 24 (UPI) The Trump administration is not on pace to achieve its goal of vaccinating 20 million Americans against COVID-19 before the end of the year as it s only reached about 5% of that target so far.
A little more than 1 million vaccine doses have been administered in the United States to date, according to tracking by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

WASHINGTON Pfizer and BioNTech will supply the U.S. with an additional 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine under a second agreement.
The drugmakers said Wednesday that they expect to deliver all the doses by July 31. Pfizer already has a contract to supply the government with 100 million doses of its vaccine, which requires two doses per patient.

WASHINGTON The U.S. government is close to a deal to acquire tens of millions of additional doses of Pfizer s vaccine in exchange for helping the pharmaceutical giant gain better access to manufacturing supplies.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the deal is under discussion and could be finalized shortly. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations.
