US president-elect Joe Biden is expected to receive his first coronavirus vaccination as soon as next week, a Biden transition official told Reuters on Wednesday.
Biden has said he would get the injection in a public setting to instill confidence in its safety.
Outgoing Vice President Mike Pence will meanwhile be vaccinated for COVID-19 on Friday in a public event, the White House said on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Wednesday brought more bad news when US health officials reported a record number of new deaths – more than 3,500 – and more than 240,000 new coronavirus cases.
But as the US administration rolls out its vaccine program, officials have said about 20 million people are expected to get their first shots by the end of this month.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar said the government has had less visibility into the manufacturing challenges involved with Pfizer s COVID vaccine than it has with other developers. (CSPAN)
Why did healthcare workers in California and Alabama have to return trays of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine after discovering they were stored at temperatures that were colder than recommended? Does each vial of the vaccine contain more than the expected five doses, and if so, can those be used to meet the high demand for the shot?
Those were some of the questions U.S. government officials addressed yesterday. Operation Warp Speed co-leader Gen. Gustave Perna kicked off a press conference citing “an excellent collaboration” between the government and Pfizer, but when asked for additional details, he and other leaders of Operation Warp Speed hinted that the effort to speed the vaccine to vulnerable populations may not be going as smoothly as advertised.

WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. officials say they’re actively negotiating for additional purchases of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine after passing up a chance to lock in a contract this summer since it was still unclear how well the shots would work.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and special adviser Dr. Moncef Slaoui also told reporters Wednesday that Pfizer had been unable to commit to a firm delivery date. Azar called that “the core issue.”
There was no immediate comment from the company, whose CEO Albert Bourla told CNN this week it is “working very collaboratively” with the government to deliver additional vaccine through the federal Operation Warp Speed. That s a White House-backed, taxpayer-funded effort to quickly develop coronavirus vaccines and treatments.
