All students on the University of Michigan s Ann Arbor campus are being told to stay home, except for a handful of in-person classes, for the next two weeks. The school asked students to limit their time outside their residence following a recommendation from the county health department.
It comes days after the university s athletic department suspended all operations for 14 days to try to slow the spread of a variant strain of the coronavirus.

It comes days after the university s athletic department suspended all operations for 14 days to try to slow the spread of a variant strain of the coronavirus.
“We are very concerned about the potential for this variant to spread quickly,” Jimena Loveluck, health officer for Washtenaw County, said in a news release. “We are working closely with the university to take coordinated steps to control the current outbreak and understand the situation more fully. This stay-in-place recommendation will help us reduce the impact of the variant and COVID-19 in general as we investigate.”

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to provide an update to Michigan s response to the COVID-19 pandemic at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Lansing.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun and new MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel are expected to join Whitmer at the news conference to discuss efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Gordon was noticeably absent from the governor s coronavirus update Friday.
At Friday s news conference, it was announced Michigan will allow indoor dining on a limited basis starting Feb. 1, an order Gordon signed hours before he left.
Louisiana governor asks residents to wear masks as more contagious variant is confirmed in state

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards implored residents to continue to wear a mask as the UK variant is confirmed in states across the nation. Last week the Louisiana State Department of Health identified at least one case of the UK variant in its state.
“This variant spreads more easily from one person to another than other viral strains currently circulating in the United States, though It has not been shown to cause more severe disease,” their statement said.
