Arts and humanities advocate Roberta Denning, who earned her undergraduate degree in English and her MBA from Stanford, has been elected to the university’s Board of Trustees. Her five-year term begins Feb. 1.

In 2017, Denning was awarded the university’s Gold Spike Award, one of Stanford’s highest honors for volunteer service. Specifically, Denning was recognized for “a vision for Stanford as a place where the arts and humanities are fundamental, vibrant and distinctive.” The Stanford Associates, which awards the Gold Spike, praised Denning for her “passion, thoughtfulness and constant commitment.”
Jerry Yang elected chair of Stanford University Board of Trustees
Stanford alumnus Jerry Yang, founding partner of AME Cloud Ventures and co-founder of Yahoo!, has been elected chair of the Stanford University Board of Trustees, succeeding Jeff Raikes.

Jerry Yang, a Stanford graduate who co-founded the search engine and web services provider Yahoo! and is currently the founding partner of the venture fund AME Cloud Ventures, has been elected chair of the Stanford University Board of Trustees. His two-year term begins July 1, 2021.

Yang, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering in 1990 from Stanford, succeeds Jeff Raikes, co-founder of the Raikes Foundation and former chief executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Raikes has served as chair since 2017. He will remain on the board of trustees after his term as chair concludes.
Time holds the key to 6G 5G is still in the early stages of its rollout but the attention in R&D is now on the next generation to come, even if its launch may be some way off.
At the VLSI Symposia 2020 in June, Takehiro Nakamura, senior VP and general manager of 5G Laboratories at NTT Docomo, said he expects 6G to arrive a decade from now. But geopolitics driven by the US even with a change in administration may play a role in speeding up the development of follow-ons to 5G.
In an online seminar earlier this autumn organised by Stanford University s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) group, Mike Brown, director of the US Defense Innovation Unit, pointed to the way in which Chinese suppliers had overtaken telecom suppliers based in the west: On 5G, we were asleep at the switch: we ve let telecoms leadership leave the US.
