This year’s report uncovers dogs languishing across the country in puppy mills, many of which are licensed and still in business despite years of animal care violations, including citations for injured and emaciated dogs, dogs and puppies exposed to extreme weather, and dogs found living in filthy conditions, the Humane Society wrote in a statement.

Earl Light s Corn Creek Kennel operation in Phelps County was prominently included in the Humane Society of the United States ninth annual Horrible Hundred report documenting animal suffering at what it calls  puppy mill dog breeders.

Humane Society releases Horrible Hundred list: Ohio puppy mills

On Monday, the Humane Society of the United States released its annual Horrible Hundred report, which details problem puppy mills and puppy brokers across the country.  Ohio has one of the largest numbers of puppy sellers on the list, with 16. Some of those breeders have been cited multiple times. Breeders can be included on the Horrible Hundred report for sick or injured dogs, inhumane and unsafe conditions, and a lack of protection from the heat and cold.  Humane society officials said puppies from these dealers can be sold to families in every state because puppy mills sell to pet stores across the country. 

A Vegan Cooking Show Just Debuted on Dr Oz s OzTube

On May 5, new vegan cooking show Global Bites With Eddie Garza debuted on new on-demand digital video platform Dr. Oz’s OzTube. Eddie Garza is a vegan chef, cookbook author, program manager of food and nutrition for The Humane Society of the United States, and VegNews magazine food columnist who works to reform food systems in marginalized communities. For his new show, Garza will take viewers on a global culinary journey with dishes such as Roman pasta carbonara, Valencian paella, Lebanese maghmour, and Cuban ropa vieja, often accompanied by vegan celebrities such as model and television host Daisy Fuentes.  The first season of the show will include 15 episodes, the first three episodes of which will premiere on May 5 with new episodes streaming every Wednesday after that. The group identified 16 Ohio puppy mills in the annual report that compiles instances of animal suffering and consumer complaints, according to a Humane Society media release. Problems at the 16 puppy mills identified in the report were documented by state or USDA investigators. Violations included dogs being kept in filthy, poor housing conditions, injured dogs not receiving adequate veterinary care, dogs suffering in the cold without proper shelter, the release said.
