The New Puppy Protection Act Is Fighting to Better the Lives of Dogs in Puppy Mills

The New Puppy Protection Act Is Fighting to Better the Lives of Dogs in Puppy Mills People 4/28/2021 New legislation aimed at protecting dogs from harsh breeding conditions has officially been introduced. Earlier this week, Sen. Richard Durbin introduced a bill The Puppy Protection Act that aims to improve various conditions for dogs in puppy mills, according to a blog post from the Humane Society of the United States. Backed by other politicians, the Puppy Protection Act would amend the Animal Welfare Act and require that improvements be made by licensed dog breeders who sell their animals. According to the Humane Society, these breeders are currently required to obtain a USDA license, undergo regular inspections and comply with standards of care defined in the Animal Welfare Act, but there are minimal standards in place, leaving dogs to endure less than ideal living conditions.

National animal groups shun Oregon, Colorado initiatives

“At the bottom of every one of these ballot initiatives is an animal rights group that’s driven by a larger strategy, but it’s not as coordinated on the surface as people would like to think it is,” said John Robinson, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s senior vice president of membership and communications. The initiatives’ supporters are “similar in their messaging tactics and driven by a larger conversation that’s not easily linked to one group,” Robinson told Farm Progress. The Oregon proposal’s sponsor, a group called End Animal Cruelty, was started last year, according to its Twitter feed. The campaign’s leader, Portland animal activist David Michelson, has described himself on social media as a former psychologist and public health worker. He told a Facebook host in January that he became a vegan and animal activist after watching the 2018 documentary “Dominion,” which chronicles animal abuse.

Texas House Passes Bill Targeting Puppy Mills, Protecting Pets

Texas House Passes Bill Targeting Puppy Mills, Protecting Pets Syndicated Local – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday targeting puppy mills. HB 1818 would prohibit the sale of commercially-raised dogs and cats in pet stores. This is a major step in encouraging Texans to acquire pets from humane sources, like shelters, rescues and responsible breeders, instead of inhumane puppy mills, which is where most pet store puppies come from. Rep. Jared Patterson filed the bill and said it would also require pet stores to maintain records as to where the animal was obtained from for at least a year, according to a release from Patterson’s office.
