When pets in the community are left unaltered, they can produce upwards of a dozen offspring in a year, leading to an exponential increase in the pet population when each of those cats or dogs has a litter and so on. The Big Fix is aimed at preventing the number of pets that would end up on the streets.
“They (cats) can go into heat three times a year,” Norman said. “You can do the numbers. They have multiples. Unfortunately there s not enough shelter capacity.”
Cats of all kinds
The event included both owned and feral cats, unlike last year s focus on just feral felines. Owned cats were spayed and neutered at VOCAL, while feral or community cats were altered at Sheltering Hands.
Sid Mastrangelo – husband, father, business owner, outreach volunteer and longtime organizer of car shows at the Big Lots parking lot on west State Road 200 – died from the effects of COVID-19. But the car show that he so loved is continuing down the road, just with different drivers.
Mastrangelo, 64, organized the Big Lots car shows for 15 years with his wife of 36 years, Debbie, and several car lover friends. His legacy of goodwill will live on, as fellow car buffs continue to stage the Big Lots shows. Sid loved to put on the car shows, Debbie Mastrangelo said. Her husband died on Christmas Day following a two-week bout with COVID-19.
