The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County received 18 dogs Wednesday evening.
About 70 dogs arrived at Palm Beach International Airport. The humane society was working with the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach, which is taking the remainder of the animals.
The transfer flight was coordinated through Wings of Rescue and Austin Pets Alive!, two organizations that have taken the lead in Texas to rescue animals most at-risk. All of the animals arriving Wednesday had been housed at shelters devastated by the severe winter storms.
A historic cold snap in Texas in February left millions of residents without power in freezing weather. Many experienced burst pipes that flooded homes.
