MANISTIQUE A fire didn’t hamper production at Manistique’s UP Paper. Although the fire started in a paper machine, the plant was fully operational less than a day later.
At 10:23 a.m. Saturday, Manistique Public Safety and volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire at UP Papers, 402 West Elk Street, in Manistique, according to Manistique Public Safety Director Kenneth C. Golat. Upon arriving on scene, officers determined the fire had started in the paper machine located on the second floor of the mill. All mill employees had been been accounted for and the UP Papers fire team was containing the fire.

WLUC-TV says Manistique Public Safety officers were called to the mill Saturday around 10:30 a.m. The fire apparently started in a paper machine and spread to the roof. It’s unknown how much damage the flames caused.
UP Paper purchased the former Manistique Paper Mill and began operations in 2016. It operates a single kraft paper machine with capacity of up to 120,000 tons.

MANISTIQUE A Garden woman has been arraigned on a meth charge in Schoolcraft County, according to the Manistique Public Safety Department. Tracy Elizabeth Ernest, 58, was formally charged Jan. 12, in the 93rd District Court with one count of Controlled Substance – Delivery on School or Library Property (narcotics or cocaine) Less than 50 grams. The charge is a felony punishable by 2 to 60 years in prison and/or a $75,000 fine. Her bond was set at 10% of $10,000 cash/surety. She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 27 at 10 a.m.
The charge stems from a traffic stop on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 4:05 a.m. During the stop, Manistique Public Safety officers and the K-9 unit found Ernest in possession of methamphetamine. She was arrested immediately and lodged in the Schoolcraft County Jail.

The Manistique Department of Public Safety reported that at 1:10 p.m. Jan. 1, public safety officers were dispatched to the Manistique Self Storage complex at South Fifth and Deer streets in Manistique on a report of breaking and entering of storage units located there.
Officers determined that four units had been burglarized. They contacted the owners and discovered that one of the units had a large number of items taken, including a Honda CB1000R motorcycle, motorcycle apparel, numerous other tools, miscellaneous equipment and a pressure washer.
MANISTUQUE Arrests have been made in connection with recent burglaries, according to the Manistiuqe Public Safety Department.
On Friday, January 1, at 1:10 p.m., Manistique Public Safety officers were called to the Manistique Self Storage complex located at South Fifth and Deer Streets in Manistique for the report of the breaking and entering of storage units located there. Upon investigation, officers determined a total of four units had been burglarized. Officers contacted the owners and determined one of the units had a large number of items taken, including a Honda CB1000R motorcycle, motorcycle apparel, numerous other tools, miscellaneous equipment, and a pressure washer.
