LET offering free rides to vaccination clinics
Lake Erie Transit is providing free bus transportation to and from area vaccination clinics for residents and workers in Bedford and Frenchtown townships and the Monroe area.
Riders must show proof of their appointments, the company said in a press release. LET is joining the Michigan Public Transit System’s “Ride to Your Dose of Hope” along with more than 450 public transit companies in 41 states providing the service.
To ride free to the first vaccination appointment, riders must show the bus driver the phone text from vaccine officials, said Mark Jagodzinski, general manager for LET. For the second shot, riders must present their vaccine card with the appointment scheduled. The offer covers all LET services. Riders taking the bus home from the vaccine site will ride free, Jagodzinski said.

Area school districts continue to monitor pandemic, positivity rates
Monroe County’s largest school district has made the decision to briefly convert to all-remote learning after its students return from spring break.
Monroe Public Schools announced students at all of its campuses will switch to online learning April 12-16 due to concerns surrounding rising instances of COVID-19 within its community and the broader county.
The district’s regularly scheduled spring break begins today and ends April 9. Students were originally set to return to in-person learning April 12. That return has been delayed until April 19.
State of Emergency declared for Monroe County s COVID-19 situation
Monroe County officials have taken the unusual step of declaring a Local State of Emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This declaration pertains to public meetings; and is one of several steps that local authorities have taken in recent days to respond to an increase in COVID-19 cases.
The order was signed by Mark Brant, chairman of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners; and issued Wednesday by Monroe County Emergency Management division.
Mark A. Hammond, director of the county’s Emergency Management Division, said the declaration was issued to allow all government bodies in the county to continue meeting virtually if they want. Councils and boards also have the option of meeting in person, but must adhere to the limit of 25 people due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by federal and state authorities.
