Rochester police officers whose physical restraint of Daniel Prude may have caused his death will not face criminal charges, Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday.
Clearly upset at a news conference at Aenon Missionary Baptist Church in Rochester, James said that a grand jury had decided the officers committed no crimes in Prude s death. During her announcement, James placed Prude s death as one flashpoint in a history of racist and deadly intersections with police and Black men and women. There needs to be systematic change in the criminal justice system and policing in New York and all throughout this nation, she said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

This week, a March autopsy report from the Monroe County Medical Examiner s Office was released, which ruled the March 23 death of Daniel Prude at the hands of police officers in Rochester, New York, a homicide, saying he died from complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint. The case is now being investigated by the New York attorney general s office.
Prude, a 41-year-old Black man who had come to Rochester from Chicago to visit his brother, was experiencing a mental health crisis, and was running through the street naked. His family called authorities for help, but what happened instead is that the cops ended up handcuffing him, putting a bag over his head a spit bag intended to protect the officers from COVID-19 and then kneeling on his back. There is video and it is horrific.

The Pittsford, New York-based doctor was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, and six counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance prescription for overprescribing high doses of opioids.
He was also charged with healthcare fraud for inducing Medicare to pay for the medically unnecessary prescriptions that ultimately contributed to his patient s overdose death.
